SPECIAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC BRANDS OF NATIONAL INTEREST

Article 31 of Decree-Law No. 34 of April 30, 2019 (known as the "Decreto Crescita"), converted into law with amendments by Article 1 of Law No. 58 of June 28, 2019, provides that owners or exclusive licensees of trademarks registered for at least fifty years, or those for which continuous use for at least fifty years can be demonstrated, and which have been used for the commercialization of products or services from a nationally recognized, historically rooted production company, may apply for registration in the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest, established under the Italian Patent and Trademark Office. The Ministerial Decree of January 10, 2020, established the "Historic Brand of National Interest" logo, which registered companies may use for commercial and promotional purposes, and defined the criteria for its use. In addition to the trademark representation, the register includes a unique registration number for each brand, along with key bibliographic data and details of the related application.

Five different “Ancillotti” trademarks, in various denominations and designs, have received a highly prestigious recognition: their inclusion in the Special Register of Historic Brands of Strategic National Interest, established by Law No. 58 of June 28, 2019, by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. They were registered under numbers 29, 126, 128, 402, and 732. Ancillotti is the first bicycle and motorcycle brand to be entered into this special register by MISE. The Ancillotti mechanical workshop was founded by Ernesto Ancillotti in 1907 in the historic Florentine district of San Frediano. The business was later carried on by his son Gualtiero, who soon made a name for himself as a brilliant motorcycle tuner. From his workshop came the first Harley-Davidsons modified with a suspension frame instead of a rigid one, go-karts, and customized Innocenti Lambrettas. With the latter, he set a world speed record at Monza in 1965 and, in 1966, two world speed records at the Elvington circuit in England. These records, achieved in the standing-start quarter-mile and the flying kilometer, remain unbeaten to this day. Building on these sporting achievements, Ancillotti began producing and marketing its famous tuning kits for Lambrettas, along with sports seats and exhausts. In 1967, the company launched its own production of Ancillotti-branded motorcycles. Thanks to true engineering intuition and innovative designs—including the globally recognized 1980 Pull-Shock patent—it quickly secured numerous victories in both national and international competitions. Beyond sporting success, Ancillotti also achieved remarkable commercial results. By the early 1970s, it had moved beyond its artisan phase to become a fully structured company, establishing a modern production facility in Sambuca Val di Pesa, Chianti, a few kilometers from Florence. This site housed the first assembly line, allowing the company to reach an annual production capacity of approximately 3,000 motorcycles, with a total output of over 40,000 units. More than 100 motorcycle models were created here, including enduro, motocross, trial, regularity, and competition bikes, produced in various versions and engine configurations. All shared high performance levels, making the Florentine motorcycles a true status symbol among off-road enthusiasts—so much so that they are still considered an icon of the industry today, synonymous with quality craftsmanship and innovation. Fifteen-time Italian champion in Motocross, Regularity, and Trial from 1971 to 1979. Winner of European championships in Finland, Sweden, France, and Spain. Gold medalist at the "International Six Days Trial." Ancillotti motorcycles represent the dream of multiple generations in the collective imagination, with the most famous model being the Scarab. Production continued until the mid 1980s. In 1995, the Ancillotti Historic Register was established, registered with the FMI, along with the Scarab Club, founded and presided over by Alfredo Gramitto Ricci (Casa Editrice Ricordi). He set up a dedicated museum in the heart of Milan, showcasing over 180 Ancillotti motorcycles. Since 1986, Alberto Ancillotti has transferred his expertise from motocross to mountain bikes, including enduro and downhill. By the late 1980s, the Ancillotti brand had become a dominant force in the mountain biking world, just as it had been in motorcycles, excelling in national and international competitions. The brand has consistently achieved outstanding sporting success in Enduro and Downhill, from the national title in 1992 to two world titles in 1993 and 2009, and more recently, category victories at the DH and Enduro world championships in 2019, 2020, and 2023. Several bike models have been produced by the brand to date, including the Scarab A, Scarab B, DH Scarab, Tomaso, FRY, Scarab EVO 27.5, Scarab EVO 29, Scarab EVO 29 DH, and the latest model introduced in 2024, the Scarab EVO 29 SB.
