Ancillotti with Three Historic Brands at the Ministry of Economic Development
When thinking of Enduro, Cross, and Trial motorcycles or MTB bikes, one cannot help but think of a quintessentially Italian name: Ancillotti.
A leader in the production of Italian-made bikes and motorcycles, Ancillotti has now achieved a new milestone: with its three brands, Ancillotti, Ancillotti Motorcycles, and Ancillotti Scarab, it has entered the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest by the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE).
Ancillotti in the Register of Historic Brands of National Interest
Three Ancillotti brands are now listed in the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest, established by the MISE in 2019.
Which brands can aspire to be admitted to this register? Only those with a long history can apply for admission. To qualify, a brand must have been registered under the same name for at least 50 years.
Once admitted, they can use the “Historic Brands of National Interest” logo, which depicts the Italian peninsula. Additionally, they have the opportunity to join Amsi, the Italian Association of Historic Brands. This association, dedicated exclusively to brands that have played a significant role in Italy's economic history, was founded in 2021 by eight major Italian brands, including Benetton.
The Origins of the Ancillotti Company
Ernesto Ancillotti, father of Gualtiero, began the family tradition in 1907 when he opened a mechanical repair workshop in Florence.
Three decades later, Gualtiero established a new workshop, Ancillotti Elaborazioni Specialità Moto. Located in the San Frediano district of Florence, it quickly gained recognition for the remarkable customizations developed there.
First and foremost, we remember the modifications made to the WLA Harley Davidson motorcycles; thanks to new suspensions and a highly modern shock absorption system, these bikes became much more comfortable to ride.
After the WLA, the focus shifted to the Lambretta Innocenti. Two customizations made history in the 1960s by setting records on the Monza and Elvington circuits: the Lambretta Ancillotti Special 200 c.c. and the Lambretta Ancillotti Super Sprint 250 c.c. The latter achieved two records that remain unbeaten today: the standing kilometer and the launched quarter-mile.
The Company's Growth
In 1968, the first models of what would become Ancillotti's flagship product in the following years were born: the Scarab.
The early Scarabs were customizations of the Beta Cross Special, but as demand and success grew, Ancillotti decided to take a step forward.
Leaving behind the San Frediano workshop and customizations, Gualtiero opened an industrial plant in Sambuca Val di Pesa, from which the legendary Cross, Enduro, and Trial motorcycles emerged.
Starting in the 1990s, Ancillotti expanded its production to include MTB bikes for Enduro and Downhill. Once again, the Scarab models became the company's flagship.
After 2000
The production of bikes and motorcycles continued after 2000.
In 2009, four units of the Ancillotti 125 G.A. Cross were produced in collaboration with Friba Racing.
As for MTB bikes, the Scarab EVO 29 HD stands out, having won a world championship in 2021.
