Ancillotti in the Special Register of Historic Brands
When talking about Ancillotti, one isn't just referring to an Italian brand of motorcycles and bicycles, but to the history of Made in Italy motorcycles and bicycles for Enduro and Cross.
Inserted into the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest by the MISE (Ministry of Economic Development), Ancillotti is the first motorcycle and bicycle brand to receive this recognition.
Why Ancillotti Scarab is in the MISE Register
The Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest is a list of brands that have made history in the Italian economy and in Made in Italy products. Established by the Ministry of Economic Development in 2019, it is open exclusively to brands that have been registered for a minimum of 50 years without any change in name.
The Ancillotti Scarab brand fully meets this requirement and has been admitted to the Special Register of Historic Brands of National Interest with registration number 128.
Historic brands can freely use the "Historic Brand of National Interest" logo, depicting the Italian peninsula, and they also have the opportunity to join the Italian Association of Historic Brands, established in June 2021.
Ancillotti: The History
The brand's history dates back to 1907 with the opening of the Ancillotti family's first mechanical repair shop. Thirty-one years later, Gualtiero, who grew up surrounded by engines in his father's workshop, opened the Ancillotti Elaborazioni Specialità Moto in the San Frediano district.
Thanks to his ingenuity, he was able to produce exceptional customizations. For example, we can recall the modifications made to the suspensions of Harley Davidson WLA motorcycles, which made these colossal bikes much easier to handle.
In the 1960s, two customized Lambretta Innocenti models emerged from the workshop, which made history thanks to the records set on the Monza circuit in Italy and the Elvington circuit in England.
Ancillotti Scarab and the Florentine Scarab
In Florence, there is a pyramid. It’s not an Egyptian pyramid, but an icehouse built in 1796 by the architect Manetti.
Above the entrance of this building, there is a bas-relief depicting a scarab. You don’t need to travel to Florence to see it or look for photos of the bas-relief. You just need to look at the Ancillotti Scarab logo.
From the image to the name, Gualtiero and his two sons decided to use the scarab as the symbol for Ancillotti’s Cross, Enduro, and Off-road motorcycles.
Ancillotti Scarab: From Motorcycles to Bicycles
The Ancillotti Scarab motorcycles were born in 1968. The very first models, in keeping with tradition, were customizations. Specifically, Gualtiero customized the Beta Cross Special.
The Scarabs immediately achieved great success, prompting Ancillotti to take an important step: moving from customizations to becoming a manufacturer.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Ancillotti Scarabs were among the most successful motorcycles among young two-wheeler enthusiasts.
In the 1990s, the company expanded into bicycle production, creating several models of Ancillotti Scarab MTB, high-performance bicycles ideal for Enduro and Downhill.
The latest prototype, the Ancillotti Scarab EVO 29 HD, won a world championship this year.
